I have experience teaching students of all ages and levels.

I have spent time in numerous international musical environments, and have studied with some of the finest musicians in the U.S. and Europe. I have thereby learned to engage music from a number of different perspectives. I can select from a variety of approaches to material, whether technical, theoretical or conceptual. Depending on the needs and desires of the student, I will of course tailor the approach to the situation.

A unique aspect of my teaching is that I can incorporate modes and methods of engagement with jazz, from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. The very concept of jazz is currently bursting at the seams, largely due to the vast amount of evolution occurring in the field, in all corners of the globe. I have experienced several of those “corners” firsthand, and therefore feel that I can convey some of the particulars that those respective cultures bring to the table.

From a traditional American straight-ahead or avant-garde approach, which comprised my early influences Chicago, to a "Nordic" approach to jazz, which I experienced in Finland, to the melting-pot of European influences that I am currently finding in London, I have constantly sought to make sense of this music from a diversity of perspectives. These diverse approaches are applicable to all levels of playing, from beginner through advanced, and I have made it a point to crystallize and categorize these approaches to some extent, so that they may be clearly conveyed.

Obviously, at a certain point, musical expression becomes simply creative, and begins to defy categorization. It is my goal to help anyone I teach to have some experience of this kind of expression.
